Bronco General Manager John Elway announced Monday that it is Transition to the role of Chief of Football Operations He will lead the search for a general manager who will have the final say in personnel matters. List of potential candidates (alphabetical order):
Nick Casereo
The current role: New England player for singles
As a member of the Patriots for 20 years and just completed his 18th season in the team’s personnel department, Casereo holds his current title since 2008. He worked as a Professional Personnel Manager from 2004-2006 before moving on to the coaching side for three years (receivers).
Thomas Dimitrov
The current role: He was fired from the General Manager position of the Atlanta Falcons on October 11.
If Broncos members wanted the new General Manager to have prior experience, Dimitroff might be at or near the top of the list. Dimitrov was a longtime scout in Detroit, Cleveland and New England, General Manager of the Falcons from 2008-20 and was responsible for crafting midfielder Matt Ryan.
Champ Kelly
The current role: Chicago Assistant Director for the Individual Player
Kelly checks two potentially important chests – experience with Broncos and knowledge of coach Vic Fangio. Kelly worked at Bronco from 2007 until 2014, rising from University Scouts to Assistant Scouting Coordinator Supporter / College and Assistant Director of Professional Personnel.
Martin Mayhew
The current role: Vice President of San Francisco Team Individual Player
A former Washington and Tampa Bay player, Mayhew moved into action five years after his retirement. He worked in Detroit from 2001 to 15, the last eight of them being General Manager. He’s been with the New York Giants at 16 and with the 49th team for the past four years.
Adam Peters
The current role: Vice President of San Francisco Team Individual Player
Peters began his career in the NFL with New England (2003-2008), first two as a scouting assistant and then progressing to the Scouting District. Peters joined the Broncos in 2009 as a regional scout before moving on to the National Scouts (2011-13), Assistant Director of College Scouts (2014-15) and Director of College Scouts (2016).
Jerry Reese
The current role: He has not associated with any team since leaving the New York Giants in 2017.
Reese served on the Giants Team from 1994-2017, rising from college scouts to professional scouts to director of player players to 11 years as General Manager, during which time the Giants twice won the Super Bowl.
Rick Smith
The current role: He has not associated with any team since leaving Houston Texas in 2017.
Another candidate connected to Bronco. He was the assistant coach of the defensive team from 1996 to 1999 before moving to the front office as a manager of professional personnel from 2000-05. Texas appointed him as General Manager in 2006 and he has served for 12 years in that position, including the last six as Deputy General Manager / Executive Vice President of Soccer Operations.
John Spitek
The current role: Director of the Tampa Bay player
Spytek worked for Broncos from 2013 to 2015 as a Southwest Territory Scout (13) and National Scout (14-15). He is in his fifth year with Tampa Bay and oversees the daily operations of the team for professional scouting departments and colleges. Spytek has also worked in Philadelphia and Cleveland.
Dave Ziegler
The current role: Assistant New England Director for Personnel Players
Ziegler completed his eighth season in the Patriots Scouts Division and his first season as an assistant manager for an individual player. He served four years as a manager for professional people and three years as a manager for professional scouts. Before joining the Patriots, he worked for three years at Broncos.
