Russian dissident Alexey Navalny He long denounced Twitter’s decision to permanently ban President Trump, saying it appeared to be “based on emotions and personal political preferences.”
Navalny, a staunch critic of the Kremlin, narrowly escaped after being poisoned in August with the nerve agent Novichok by agents of Russian President Vladimir Putin.
He spent more than a month recovering at the German Hospital in Berlin.
“I think banning Donald Trump on Twitter is an unacceptable act of censorship,” Navalny said in 11 parts on Twitter. “Don’t tell me he’s banned for violating Twitter’s rules. I get death threats here every day for many years, and Twitter isn’t blocking anyone (it’s not what I’m asking).”
“Of course, Twitter is a private company,” Navalny said. “But we have seen many examples in Russia and China of such private companies becoming the best friends of the state and enablers when it comes to censorship.”
The freedom fighter warned that authoritarian states would consider Twitter’s decision and use it to justify similar campaigns against dissenting voices in their countries.
Trump was permanently banned Friday evening after inciting riots on Capitol Hill, resulting in at least five deaths. He pledged to respond in a statement the same night, indicating that he might join a new social media platform or start his own position.
“I expected this to happen. We have been negotiating with many other sites, and we’ll make a big announcement soon, while also looking at possibilities to build our own platform in the near future. We will not be silenced!” He said.
